The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution as snowfall, icy conditions and freezing temperatures are expected to affect several parts of South Africa over the coming days.
According to the RTMC, the adverse weather is forecast to impact the Eastern Cape highlands, the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal, and routes leading towards Lesotho. The expected conditions are likely to create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on mountain passes, high-altitude routes and major freight corridors.
Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and remain alert for possible road closures, poor visibility and slippery road surfaces caused by snow and ice.
Road Safety Advice
The RTMC has issued the following safety recommendations for all road users:
- Reduce speed and drive according to the prevailing weather and road conditions.
- Increase the following distance between vehicles to allow more time to stop safely.
- Avoid sudden braking, harsh acceleration and sharp steering on icy or snow-covered roads.
- Switch on headlights to improve visibility, even during daylight hours.
- Ensure vehicles are roadworthy, with tyres, brakes, lights and windscreen wipers in good working condition.
- Carry emergency supplies such as warm clothing, blankets, drinking water, non-perishable food, a fully charged cellphone and a torch.
- Check weather forecasts and official traffic updates before travelling.
- Follow all instructions issued by traffic law enforcement officers and emergency personnel.
The RTMC also warned motorists not to drive around road closure barriers or attempt to cross roads covered by snow or ice. The corporation said such actions place drivers, passengers and emergency responders at unnecessary risk while also delaying rescue and recovery operations.
Freight operators and public transport companies have also been encouraged to closely monitor weather conditions and review travel plans where severe weather may disrupt operations.
The RTMC said it will continue working with provincial and local traffic authorities, law enforcement agencies and emergency services to monitor the situation and provide regular updates on road conditions and traffic management interventions.
Motorists travelling through affected areas are encouraged to plan ahead, delay trips where possible and prioritise safety until weather conditions improve.
