RTMC urges motorists to renew vehicle licences ahead of busy festive season

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is reminding motorists to renew their vehicle licence discs on time as the festive travel season approaches, warning that millions of licences are set to expire in the coming months.

According to the RTMC, more than 1 002 771 vehicle licence discs will expire by the end of October, while a further 1 060 382 are due in November and 1 112 393 in December. With October being Transport Month, the corporation is urging vehicle owners to act early and avoid penalties or disruptions to their holiday plans.

To make the process easier, the RTMC will send out SMS and email reminders to motorists registered on the online renewal system. Motorists can register by visiting online.natis.gov.za and following a few simple steps to upload their details and complete their renewal.

The online renewal platform, launched in 2022, has quickly become a preferred option for motorists. Over five million vehicle licences have been renewed through the system so far, with an average of 7 908 renewals processed daily over the past week.

Major banks, including Capitec, FNB, and Nedbank, now offer access to the platform through their mobile banking apps, further streamlining the process.

The platform also provides additional services, including payment of AARTO enforcement orders, offering motorists a one-stop solution for their vehicle compliance needs. Another recent addition is the online registration and change of ownership feature, which is particularly useful for dealerships handling bulk transactions.

Since April 2025, the system has processed 120 230 change of ownership transactions and 78 239 new registrations. Over 10 major dealerships are now actively using the service daily.

With licence renewal queues often getting longer towards the end of the year, the RTMC says motorists can save time, avoid penalties, and ensure a stress-free festive journey by renewing early.
