A terrifying crash at Christmas Pass in Mutare, Zimbabwe has once again highlighted the dangers of the notorious mountain route, after a runaway truck lost control and ploughed straight into a residential home.
CCTV footage circulating online shows the moment the truck barrels down the steep pass before smashing through a garage area. In the clip, the truck swipes a car that appears to be refuelling, then continues uncontrolled until it crashes into a house in Fairbridge Park.
Additional footage from the scene shows the truck lodged inside the home, with significant structural damage visible.
According to reports, the incident happened around 6am as the truck descended the winding stretch of Christmas Pass, a road well known among drivers for its sharp bends and steep gradients. Witnesses claim the truck lost control after a private vehicle allegedly cut in front of it while exiting a nearby service station. The driver reportedly swerved to avoid a collision, but the truck veered off the road and into the residential area.
Four Killed as Runaway Truck Slams into Vehicles at Zimbabwe’s Notorious Christmas Pass
Before crashing into the house, the truck struck a Honda Fit, dragged another vehicle for several metres, and even uprooted a tree.
The truck driver survived but sustained serious injuries. A passenger, along with occupants of the house, narrowly escaped with their lives. The property owner said the tenants had stepped into the bathroom moments before impact, likely saving them from serious harm.
At the time of reporting, it was still unclear if there were any additional injuries inside the house.
Christmas Pass, a seven-kilometre stretch leading into Mutare, has built a reputation as a danger zone for heavy vehicles. Despite efforts to improve safety, including the construction of a 33km bypass to divert trucks away from the pass, crashes continue to occur.
For truck drivers, especially those running heavy loads, this route demands full control, patience, and proper braking discipline. One small mistake on that descent, and things go south very quickly.
