South Africa has officially welcomed one of the most advanced long-distance coaches ever built after Intercape’s world-first right-hand drive Marcopolo Paradiso G8 1800 Double Decker arrived in the country.
Built specifically for Southern African operating conditions, the new flagship coach combines luxury, cutting-edge safety technology and high passenger capacity in a package unlike anything currently operating on local roads. It is also the first of 21 new-generation coaches Intercape will introduce over the coming months as part of its fleet modernisation programme.
With seating for up to 80 passengers, a massive 800-litre fuel tank, a unique four-axle design and camera-based digital mirrors replacing conventional side mirrors, the new coach represents a significant leap forward in long-distance passenger transport.

A world-first designed for Southern Africa
Unlike conventional double-decker coaches, the Marcopolo Paradiso G8 1800 was developed in a four-axle (8×2), right-hand drive configuration specifically for Southern African operating requirements.
The project was jointly engineered by Marcopolo’s teams in Brazil and Marcopolo South Africa, resulting in a coach tailored to local technical and regulatory requirements while improving passenger capacity and long-haul performance.
Measuring 15 metres in length, the coach can accommodate up to 80 passengers without compromising comfort, thanks to its specially developed interior layout and improved weight distribution provided by the additional axle.
For operators covering thousands of kilometres each week, the large 800-litre fuel tank also means fewer refuelling stops on long-distance and cross-border routes.
Volvo power meets cleaner, quieter travel
The coach is mounted on Volvo’s B510R Euro 6 8×2 chassis, combining proven long-distance performance with lower emissions and improved fuel efficiency.
The Euro 6 platform is designed to reduce environmental impact while delivering smoother, quieter operation, making journeys more comfortable for passengers and more economical for operators facing rising fuel costs.
Behind the wheel, drivers benefit from Volvo’s modern cockpit, digital instrumentation and intelligent systems designed to reduce fatigue during extended hours on the road.
The mirrors have disappeared, and there’s a good reason why
One of the most noticeable changes is the absence of traditional exterior mirrors.
Instead, the coach uses Digital Mirror Technology, also known as Electronic Rear View (ERV), replacing conventional mirrors with cameras and high-resolution displays inside the cab.
The system is designed to provide a wider field of vision, improve visibility during poor weather and night driving, reduce aerodynamic drag and help drivers monitor surrounding traffic more effectively.
Combined with advanced braking systems, electronic stability control, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation technology, the coach introduces a new level of safety for long-distance passenger transport.
Luxury passengers will notice from the moment they board
The latest-generation G8 interior has been designed with premium long-distance travel in mind.
Passengers can expect redesigned reclining seats, improved ergonomics, USB charging ports, onboard entertainment, enhanced climate control and a noticeably quieter cabin thanks to improved sound insulation.
Large panoramic windows, modern lighting and refined interior finishes further enhance the premium travel experience, whether travelling across South Africa or on cross-border routes.

The arrival of the Marcopolo Paradiso G8 1800 marks only the beginning of Intercape’s latest investment.
The coach is the first delivery in an order of 21 units that will arrive in phases over the coming months, forming part of the company’s continued investment in safer, more efficient and more comfortable long-distance travel.
