SANRAL to Close N2 for Blasting Between Mount Frere and Mount Ayliff on 3 & 6 June

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has issued a traffic advisory for road users travelling on the N2 between Mount Frere and Mount Ayliff due to planned blasting operations.

Blasting will take place at 14h00 on the following dates:

Tuesday, 3 June 2025 – Approximately 4 km from Mount Frere heading towards Mount Ayliff

Friday, 6 June 2025 – Approximately 3.5 km from Mount Frere in the same direction

During these operations, the road will be fully closed for up to 30 minutes to ensure the safety of road users and construction crews.

Alternative Routes

Motorists travelling from Kokstad to Mthatha are advised to take alternate routes to avoid delays:

  • Via Matatiele to Mount Fletcher, or
  • Via Flagstaff and Lusikisiki to Port St Johns, connecting back to the N2 in Mthatha via the R61

The shortest detour is approximately 69 km longer and could add around 50 minutes to your journey.

“Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly, consider alternative routes and to use caution when making use of the road,” said Mbulelo Peterson, SANRAL’s Eastern Cape Provincial Head.

SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience and appreciates motorists’ patience and cooperation during this essential work.
