SANRAL Offers a Full Toll Rebate For Port Shepstone Motorists – Here’s How To Claim It

Great news for Port Shepstone motorists! SANRAL is offering a 100% Frequent User Toll Rebate on the N2 South Coast Toll Road between the Oribi Toll Plaza and Umtentweni ramps.

This comes as a relief during the R102 uMzimkhulu River Bridge repairs, which have rerouted traffic through the toll road.

Why the Rebate?

The uMzimkhulu River Bridge, built in 1958 using the old caisson construction method, suffered structural damage due to prolonged rainfall and flooding. The water flow weakened the bridge’s piers, causing them to rotate and compromising the bridge’s integrity.

To ensure public safety, the bridge was closed for emergency repairs starting 17 March 2025, with an expected duration of six months and a cost of R190 million.

How to Qualify for the Rebate

To benefit from the 100% rebate:

  • Get a SANRAL tag: Ensure your vehicle is fitted with a valid SANRAL electronic toll tag.
  • Register as a Frequent User: Sign up for a SANRAL Frequent User account and ensure it’s in good standing.
  • Maintain Funds: Keep sufficient funds in your tag account to transact.
  • Valid Transits: Travel on the N2 South Coast Toll Road between the Oribi Northern Local Toll Ramp Plaza and the Umtentweni Southern on-/off-ramps (Rethman Drive Interchange).

The rebate is effective from 8 May 2025 and will continue until 30 September 2025 or until the bridge repairs are completed, whichever comes first.

Additional Support

To assist motorists, SANRAL has deployed mobile and self-service facilities in the area to help with registration and account updates.

Mobile payment terminals are available at Hibberdene Pick ‘n Pay (Roof-top Parking) and Ray Nkonyeni Library (Main Parking Lot) from 7–14 May 2025. Operating hours are Monday–Friday: 09:00–18:00, and Saturday & Sunday: 09:00–12:00. Self-Service Terminals (SSTs) are available 24/7 at Oribi Plaza, with additional locations to be announced.

This initiative by SANRAL aims to alleviate the financial burden on regular commuters affected by the bridge closure. By offering a full rebate on toll fees, SANRAL demonstrates its commitment to supporting local communities during infrastructure upgrades. Motorists are encouraged to take advantage of this offer and ensure their accounts are up to date to benefit fully from the rebate.
