The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced planned blasting operations on the N2 between Grahamstown (Makhanda) and the Fish River Pass.
Motorists are advised to take note of scheduled road closures on the following dates:
- Monday, 3 February 2025
- Thursday, 6 February 2025
- Monday, 10 February 2025
- Thursday, 13 February 2025
- Monday, 17 February 2025
- Thursday, 20 February 2025
- Monday, 24 February 2025
- Thursday, 27 February 2025
Blasting will take place at 15h00 on each of the above dates. The N2 will be closed from 15h00 to 16h00 to allow time for debris clearing and to ensure road safety before reopening.

Additional Traffic Restrictions:
In addition to the temporary closures, further traffic restrictions will apply on N2 Section 13 at:
- Km 84+500 to km 85+900
- Km 79+100 to km 79+600
These sections will be reduced to a single-lane stop-go system operating 24 hours a day.
Alternative Routes for Motorists:
Motorists are encouraged to plan their trips in advance and consider alternative routes during these periods:
- Westbound (East London/King Williams Town to Gqeberha): Take the R72 via Port Alfred and Kenton-on-Sea to Nanaga, then rejoin the N2 to Gqeberha.
- Eastbound (Gqeberha to East London/King Williams Town): Follow the N2 to Nanaga, then take the R72 through Alexandria and Port Alfred to East London.
Advisory for Road Users:
“Motorists are requested to plan their trips accordingly, consider alternative routes, and exercise caution when using the affected roads,” said Andrew van Gruting, Acting Regional Manager for SANRAL Southern Region.
