SANY Electric Trucks Make Their South African Debut

South Africa’s roads just got a glimpse of the future as the SANY EV550 6×4 electric trucks have arrived in the country, marking a landmark moment for heavy-duty transport.

Spotted recently at GHM Machinery in Durban, the trucks are set to head to Gauteng for mining operations, according to information obtained by SA Trucker. While SANY has yet to respond to enquiries about official launch dates or sales, early sightings suggest these rigs will initially be deployed in mining applications, where heavy loads and predictable routes make them ideal candidates for electric power.

About two weeks ago, a trucker reported seeing a SANY EV550 pulling a side tipper interlink for MLM Logistics, but at the time of publishing, the company had not commented. This indicates that SA could soon see electric trucks in practical freight applications beyond just pilot projects.

The SANY electric trucks are built for serious work. With a curb weight of 12.8 tonnes, two 16-tonne drive axles, and a gross combination weight of up to 120 tonnes, it’s capable of handling heavy-duty loads that would traditionally require diesel power. The 270kW continuous / 405kW peak motor delivers roughly 540 horsepower at peak, giving it the grunt to tackle demanding haulage operations while keeping emissions at zero. The 89 km/h speed limiter ensures safe and efficient highway performance.

While full specifications, pricing, and local availability remain under wraps, this debut is already significant. It signals that electric heavy-duty trucks are moving from concept to reality in South Africa, with mining and logistics likely to be early adopters.

SA Trucker will continue following this story as more information emerges, including operational performance, range, and local infrastructure readiness. For now, truckers and fleet operators are getting their first real taste of what the future of freight transport could look like — zero-emission, electric, and packing 540hp of clean power.
