Less than 24 hours after their truck was involved in a rear-end crash on the N3 Durban-bound at Ashburton, a Free State trucking company has suffered another blow.
The trailer recovered from the earlier crash scene went up in flames on the N3 Johannesburg-bound near Hilton in Pietermaritzburg in the early hours of this morning.
The incident occurred just before the final curve leading to the Hilton off-ramp.
According to a source who arrived at the scene at 2am, shortly after the fire broke out, the truck driver confirmed the trailer was the same one involved in the previous day’s collision.
The driver explained that he noticed flames while driving and immediately stopped to assess the situation.
Realising the fire was spreading rapidly, he acted quickly to detach the horse from the trailer, successfully saving it from damage.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and battled the intense flames for nearly three hours before managing to extinguish the fire.
Unfortunately, the trailer was completely destroyed, reduced to ashes.
The cause if the fire is unknown.
This marks the second unfortunate event for the trucking company in less than a day.
In the Ashburton crash, the driver was airlifted to hospital after being entrapped in his truck.
His condition remains unknown at this stage.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident.
