Shoprite Bursary Gets Driver’s Licence Boost – Final Call as Deadline Looms

The Shoprite Group, South Africa’s largest private employer, has announced a final call for applications for its 2025/26 bursary programme – and this year, it comes with a game-changing addition for the beneficiaries: support to get your driver’s licence.

Applications close on 30 September 2025, and the programme remains one of the most comprehensive in the country. It covers full tuition, on-campus accommodation, a grocery allowance, academic support, and wellness resources – plus the new driving licence benefit.

For students eyeing a career in supply chain and logistics, this could be a golden ticket.

Shoprite’s bursary has long been a stepping stone into the retail giant’s vast operations, which include a massive transport and distribution network keeping over 2,000 stores stocked across South Africa and beyond.

Successful bursary recipients often secure permanent employment within the group after graduating. With Shoprite operating one of the largest private truck fleets in the country, graduates in logistics could find themselves managing distribution centres, route planning, or even moving up into transport management.

The bursary is open to South African youth under 27 years, studying towards undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in:

  • Accounting (CA Stream – SAICA)
  • Retail Business Management
  • Supply Chain & Logistics
  • Biological and Agricultural Sciences
  • Food Sciences

Applicants can apply online via the Shoprite careers portal.

Over the last three years, Shoprite has invested more than R50 million in bursaries, supporting over 630 students. The group continues to expand aggressively, having opened 194 new supermarkets in the last financial year – all of which require strong logistics to keep shelves stocked.

For the trucking and logistics industry, this new driver’s licence perk is more than a bonus – it’s an investment in creating work-ready graduates who can literally hit the road running.
