A multi-vehicle crash occurred on Tuesday along the R34 near Utrecht in KwaZulu-Natal, after thick smoke from a badly controlled veld fire reduced visibility and caused chaos on the road.
According to MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, the crash happened in the eMadlangeni Local Municipality, between Midway and Utrecht Town. Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers were swiftly deployed to the scene to manage traffic and assist emergency services.
“Fortunately, there are no fatalities, except for two people who sustained serious injuries,” said MEC Duma, who was on the ground assisting victims. “We have internalized the fact that with the dry winter months upon us, badly controlled fires are a reality.”
The pile-up, involving multiple vehicles, highlights the dangers of reduced visibility caused by veld fires. Motorists travelling in such conditions often struggle to react in time to stopped or slow-moving vehicles ahead.
Authorities have urged drivers to avoid driving through thick smoke or flame, reduce speed immediately when visibility is compromised, and turn on both headlights and hazard lights to remain visible.
Duma also stressed the importance of coordinating with traffic departments when carrying out controlled burns, especially near major routes.

“This incident should serve as a warning. While we understand the importance of fires for land management, they must be properly controlled and monitored,” Duma said.
Motorists are advised to approach the area with caution as the scene remains active.
The department has reiterated its call for increased vigilance on the roads during the dry season, where veld fires and smoke are more common.
