The Maputo Council of Ministers has announced that some traffic lanes have opened on Africa’s longest suspension bridge leading to the Port of Maputo.
Maputo mayor David Simango said the City Council had reached consensus on the name, Maputo-Catembe Bridge. “Since the laying of the first stone for the construction of the infrastructure, the name Maputo-Catembe Bridge has been used, so this is a consensual decision,” said Simango.
The bridge and supporting road infrastructure is expected to cut driving time between Maputo and the KwaZulu-Natal border from six hours to 90 minutes.
The US$725 million project was financed by Export-Import Bank of China.
