The lawyer who was caught driving at a shocking 222km/h on the N2 near Park Rynie has been convicted and sentenced by the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court, earning himself a permanent criminal record.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has welcomed the conviction of Monde Nzima, a 32-year-old lawyer from Umtata, who was nabbed during a Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) speed operation on 2 August 2025.
According to Duma, Nzima was behind the wheel of a blue Mercedes-Benz C200 when he ignored RTI officers’ signals to stop. Officers T. Simpson and R. Brijlall gave chase and successfully apprehended him.
Appearing in court on 27 October, Nzima pleaded guilty and was handed a sentence of R40,000 or 24 months’ imprisonment, half of which was suspended for five years on the condition that he does not repeat the offence.
Duma said the ruling sends a powerful message to reckless drivers, especially those in positions of professional responsibility.
“The conversation we must now have as a society is whether speeding and running away from law enforcement is acceptable behaviour from lawyers,” said Duma.
“We are hopeful that the Legal Practice Council, which regulates the conduct of legal practitioners, will not turn a blind eye but will show transparency and accountability.”
Duma reiterated that the province’s Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense, and Alufakwa campaign remains firm in holding offenders accountable.
“Speedsters and reckless drivers are destroying families and pushing victims into poverty through disability or loss of income. We will continue ensuring that there are consequences for those who create orphans and widows on our roads,” he added.
The MEC commended the Park Rynie RTI team for their vigilance and urged professional bodies to take similar disciplinary action when their members endanger lives.
