Tata Motors Closes In on Iveco in Mega €3.8bn Deal

Tata Motors has dropped a bombshell in the commercial vehicle world – they’re buying Iveco Group in a deal worth around €3.8 billion. Ja, you read right. The Indian truck and bus powerhouse is taking over the iconic European brand, creating a massive new player in the global truck market.

Announced on 30 July 2025, the deal will see Tata take full control of Iveco’s truck and bus business – excluding its defence operations, which will be sold off separately before the merger goes through. The tender offer will be made at €14.10 per share (excluding dividends from the defence sale), with Iveco’s board fully backing the move.

Exor, Iveco’s largest shareholder with a 27% stake and 43% of voting rights, has already signed on the dotted line to support the offer. Once all the red tape is sorted – including regulatory approvals and the defence divestment – the deal is expected to wrap up in the first half of 2026.

Now for the big picture: this merger will create a serious global trucking force, moving over 540,000 units a year and raking in around €22 billion (roughly R440 billion) in revenue. The new group will have strong roots in both Europe and India, with expanding footprints across Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

According to Tata’s top brass, the move will fast-track innovation – especially in the push for zero-emission trucks. And importantly, both sides have committed to keeping jobs, factories, and brand identities intact for at least two years after the deal closes.

Tata says they’ll respect Iveco’s corporate identity, including keeping its HQ in Turin, Italy. They’ve promised not to cut jobs or close plants as part of the takeover. That’s some relief for workers across the group’s 19 plants and 36,000-strong workforce.

The combination marks a major shakeup in the global truck game. With Tata’s muscle and Iveco’s legacy, we might just be looking at the birth of a new heavyweight champion in the long-haul lanes.
