A taxi strike brought traffic to a hault on the south-bound lane of the N3 near Spaghetti Junction on Monday morning, as members of the Durban Long Distance Taxi Association blocked the route.
eThekwini metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu confirmed that officials were at the scene and advised motorists to avoid the N3 due to the disruptions. Monday marked the third day of the ongoing strike.
The taxi drivers have vowed to continue their protests until KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma fulfills his promise of issuing permits.
In October, Duma assured drivers that the permits would be ready for collection, but they remain frustrated by the delay.
Additionally, they are protesting against Operation Shanela, a law enforcement initiative targeting unroadworthy taxis and those operating illegally.
Motorist Chantelle de Chasteauneuf, who was heading toward Westville, described seeing groups of taxis blocking all lanes, causing significant traffic delays. “They had stopped and slowed down across all the lanes, blocking other motorists from getting through,” she said, noting the presence of a few metro vehicles in the area.
The strike continues to disrupt traffic, and authorities are working to resolve the situation.
Durban Metro Police wrote on Facebook, “We are currently addressing a long-distance taxi strike in Durban CBD. The protesters have blocked the N3 outgoing, causing significant traffic disruptions.
Our officers are on the ground working to resolve the situation and restore traffic flow as quickly as possible.
We urge all motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Your patience and cooperation are appreciated as we work to ensure public safety and order.”
