A devastating bus accident on the N1 southbound, just outside Bloemfontein, has claimed the lives of three people and left dozens injured in the early hours of this morning.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene at approximately 01h20 after a bus overturned just past the Church Street offramp, near the Iveco Truck Stop. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
According to information from emergency responders, medical teams conducted rapid assessments on scene before transporting 71 injured passengers to various hospitals in the Bloemfontein area for further treatment. The extent of the injuries ranges from minor to serious. Sadly, three occupants were declared deceased at the scene.
A large-scale emergency response was activated due to the severity of the incident. Agencies attending the scene included VR MED, Life EMS, provincial EMS, ER24, Netcare, SAPS, Traffic authorities, Fire OPS SA, and Fire and Rescue services. Rescue teams worked through the night to stabilise patients, secure the scene, and clear the roadway.
The bus was on its way to Zimbabwe from Cape Town.
Traffic on the N1 southbound was heavily affected, with only one lane open to traffic for several hours while emergency operations were underway. Motorists travelling through the area were urged to approach with caution and expect delays.

Authorities have not yet released details regarding the identity of the deceased or the passengers involved. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances leading to the crash.
