The bulk carrier involved in a dramatic collision at the Port of Durban has been moved to an alternative berth as investigations into the incident get underway.
The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) confirmed that the vessel collided with a quay at the Port of Durban on Monday night.
The incident, which occurred at around 21:30, was captured on video, showing the large vessel moving towards the quay before striking the port infrastructure in a violent impact.
Emergency response and operational teams were deployed immediately following the collision.
According to TNPA, the vessel was subsequently relocated to an alternative berth to allow for the necessary inspections.
“At this stage, there have been no reports of injuries and investigations will commence as soon as possible to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” TNPA said.
Photographs taken after the collision show significant visible damage to the vessel. The full extent of the damage to the ship and the quay infrastructure has not yet been confirmed.
The vessel has been identified as HAWK S, a bulk carrier measuring approximately 180 metres long and 30 metres wide. Vessel-tracking data indicates that the Liberian-flagged vessel arrived at Durban on August 31.
Cause of collision remains unknown
The circumstances that led to the collision remain under investigation.
TNPA said it is working with relevant regulatory authorities and stakeholders as part of the investigation into the incident.
The port authority said the safety of port users, employees, contractors and port infrastructure remains its highest priority.
