Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has signed a major 10-year partnership agreement with Swiss original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Liebherr, in a move set to modernise South Africa’s port infrastructure and boost operational efficiency.
The deal covers the supply and servicing of ship-to-shore (STS), rubber-tyred gantry (RTG), rail-mounted gantry (RMG) cranes and mobile harbour cranes (LHMs). It also includes a 20-year asset management programme to ensure long-term reliability and performance.
TPT confirmed that orders have already been placed under the new agreement, including four large STS cranes for the Port of Durban, which are currently being assembled locally. Additionally, 48 RTGs have been procured in batches for the Durban and Cape Town terminals, with several units already in service. More deliveries are expected in the coming months.
“The introduction of these units will significantly enhance operational capacity and efficiency at our key ports,” TPT said in a statement.

The partnership also includes investment in a new Liebherr competence and distribution centre in Durban, featuring a technology campus with professional training facilities and a dedicated innovation hub. Liebherr is simultaneously upgrading its Cape Town service centre to provide round-the-clock support.
TPT Chief Executive Jabu Mdaki hailed the agreement as a game-changer for South Africa’s ports.
“This partnership ensures access to state-of-the-art crane technology and expert support. It is a testament to our commitment to delivering world-class service to our customers and maintaining South Africa’s competitive edge in global trade,” Mdaki said.
Liebherr-Africa GM Lukas Sturn said the collaboration marks a significant step in strengthening port operations, while Declan O’Sullivan, MD of Liebherr Container Cranes, added that the company is committed to providing “industry-leading crane solutions and long-term support” for Transnet.
With new cranes, stronger life cycle management, and local service infrastructure, the partnership is expected to enhance efficiency, streamline logistics, and support long-term growth at South Africa’s major ports.
