Trac N4 Route to End Swipe Payments at Toll Gates from 1 December 2024

Road users on the N4 route need to be aware of a major shift in toll gate payments starting soon. From 01 December 2024, Trans African Concessions (TRAC) will no longer accept swipe (magstripe) card payments at any toll plaza along the N4.

With holiday season just around the corner, this change affects all toll gates along the N4, stretching from the Solomon Mahlangu off-ramp in Tshwane to the Port of Maputo in Mozambique.

Starting 1 December, swipe payments will no longer be an option.

What Payment Methods Will Be Accepted?

Even though swipe payments are being phased out, there are several easy ways to keep moving through the tolls without a hitch:

  1. Tap-and-Go Cards: Contactless-enabled debit and credit cards with EMV chip technology will be accepted. If you’re set up for “tap and pay,” you’re ready to roll.
  2. Smart Devices: Smartphone and smartwatch users can use payment apps (like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay) at the toll gates.
  3. TRAC Tags: For the fastest, hassle-free option, TRAC tags are a top choice for toll access.
  4. Cash Payments: Cash remains an option at all toll plazas.

Truckers, however, don’t need to worry as fleet, garage, and petrol magstripe cards will still be accepted even after the cutoff. This allows trucks to keep moving without having to switch to alternative payment methods, ensuring convenience and minimal disruption for the freight industry.

The changes reflect TRAC’s drive to streamline toll payments, making for smoother journeys along one of Southern Africa’s busiest corridors.
