Traffic officer and fireman killed as truck ploughs into fatal crash scene near Koppies IMG 20210203 WA0085

A traffic officer and a fireman were killed when they were busy on a fatal collision scene on N1 close to Koppies offramp in the Free State on Tuesday afternoon.

In the first accident, one person sustained fatal injuries and another person sustained minor injuries after a vehicle and a truck collided.

The truck driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital while the other motorist sustained fatal injuries. Emergency services extricated the motorist from his vehicle where he was heavily entrapped.

A secondary collision occurred as authorities were busy attending to the scene of the first crash, another truck lost control and ploughed into them.

ER24 paramedics reported that one person had sustained fatal injuries. Eight people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate, while one person sustained serious injuries.

ER24, as well as various other medical services at the scene, treated the injured before transporting them to hospital for further medical care.

It was further reported that the seriously injured patient succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

A source at the scene told SA Trucker that the deceased persons were a traffic officer and a fireman, this could not be immediately confirmed.

The N1 was closed for hours and traffic had to be diverted via the Parys/Vredefort road to Kroonstad.
