A female traffic officer has been killed in a head-on collision with an Intercape long-distance bus on the N2 near Jeffreys Bay early Monday morning.
The crash happened at around 05:40, approximately 3km outside Jeffreys Bay in the direction of Gqeberha. The officer, who was driving a state vehicle, was returning to her station after attending an earlier accident when the collision occurred.
She was declared dead on the scene.
Intercape confirmed that one of its coaches, travelling from Cape Town to East London with 42 passengers on board, was involved in the crash. No passengers were injured.
According to the company, onboard camera footage shows a third-party vehicle crossing into the oncoming lane, leading to the collision. The bus driver managed to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop, preventing further injuries.
A replacement coach was dispatched, and passengers continued their journey safely.
The N2 remains closed as emergency teams work on recovery and clearing the scene.
Police have opened a culpable homicide case at Jeffreys Bay SAPS, and investigations are ongoing.
Intercape has extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer and thanked emergency services for their swift response.
