Tragic Chain-Reaction Crash on R614 Claims Lives of Two Women

A horrific chain-reaction crash on the R614 in Upper Tongaat has claimed the lives of two women after a rear-end collision between two light motor vehicles pushed one of them into the path of an oncoming truck.

The crash occurred on Thursday afternoon and left emergency services scrambling to access the wreckage. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), their Tongaat Operations Centre was alerted to the scene just before 4pm by a distressed motorist who witnessed the devastation unfold.

Upon arrival, RUSA officers found a silver Hyundai i10 crushed underneath a heavy truck transporting sugar cane. About 150 metres away, a silver Toyota Corolla lay on its side, heavily damaged.

Tragically, the female drivers of both vehicles were declared dead on the scene.

According to the truck driver’s statement to authorities, both the Hyundai i10 and Toyota Corolla were heading in the opposite direction when the Corolla struck the back of the i10. The force of the impact sent the i10 swerving into the oncoming lane – directly into the path of the truck.

The driver of the truck sustained no serious injuries but was left visibly shaken by the ordeal.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities will be probing possible factors including speed, distraction, and road conditions.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution on the R614 as traffic disruptions continue while emergency services and investigators clear the scene.
