Ga-Sekgopo – Tragedy struck late on Saturday evening, 9 August 2025, when a bus accident on the R81 near Sekgopo, Greater Letaba Municipality, claimed the lives of four women.
According to Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Tidimallo Chuene, initial reports indicate the bus driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Sadly, four women were confirmed dead at the scene. Eight passengers sustained serious to moderate injuries, while 45 others – including the driver – suffered minor injuries.
Emergency services rushed the injured to Kgapane, Mankweng, and Van Velden hospitals for urgent care.
The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.

MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved during this difficult time. We also wish a full and speedy recovery to those injured,” she said.
MEC Mathye urged all road users – especially public transport operators – to exercise caution, obey road rules, and put passenger safety first. “Let’s work together to make sure every journey ends safely,” she added.
