Transnet Kicks Off Bayhead Road Rehab Project to Improve Durban Port Traffic Flow

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has announced a major road rehabilitation project for Bayhead Road in the Port of Durban, set to begin on 3 June and run until 15 December 2025.

The project is aimed at improving the port’s road infrastructure, enhancing safety, and boosting efficiency within one of Africa’s busiest logistics hubs.

The Bayhead Road Rehabilitation Project will also address growing frustration from Bluff residents and surrounding communities, who’ve long complained about heavy trucks clogging residential streets, staging outside port gates, and even using one-way streets illegally, posing serious safety risks.

Phased Construction, No Staging in Port Allowed
The project will be executed in two phases.

  • Phase 1 will focus on rehabilitating the inbound lane, with all access to the port redirected to the outbound carriageway from the Shell Service Station. Exiting will only be permitted via the Bypass/Detour Road.
  • Phase 2 shifts attention to the outbound lane, using the inbound lane for port access. Again, all exits must go through the Bypass Road.

No truck staging will be allowed inside the port during either phase, and TNPA has warned that project delays won’t be tolerated. Transgressors will face action in line with municipal bylaws.

Strict Traffic Management in Place
A comprehensive Traffic Management Plan (TMP) will be rolled out to maintain safety and reduce congestion. This includes:

  • Deployment of eThekwini Metro Police and TNPA Security at key intersections.
  • Installation of advanced warning signs, digital message boards, and marked detour routes.
  • Trained traffic marshals to assist with flow and guide motorists.

Consultation and Community Impact
TNPA says the plan was developed in consultation with stakeholders, including terminal operators, eThekwini officials, SAPS, and local traffic departments. The authority remains committed to engaging the public throughout the process to address concerns and ensure safety.

The project is also expected to benefit local communities through job creation and procurement opportunities. While machinery will do much of the heavy lifting, TNPA says it will prioritise hiring local labour for general tasks and traffic management. Local suppliers will also be used where possible to stimulate small business growth.

With pressure mounting for stricter control of port traffic and more eyes on known crime hotspots, many are hopeful that the Bayhead upgrade will finally bring some relief, not only for truckers but for long-suffering Bluff residents too.
