Transnet Looking for Operator to Run New Multi-Purpose Terminal at Durban Port

Durban – Transnet is on the hunt for a terminal operator to take charge of a massive new development at Maydon Wharf inside the Port of Durban.

The state-owned logistics giant, through its Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), has dropped a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the design, funding, construction, and running of a multi-purpose terminal (MPT) – and this ain’t a small gig.

Whoever lands it will be operating the terminal for 25 years before handing it back.

The project will focus mainly on handling fresh produce and break bulk cargo – think your maize, citrus, and palletised goods.

It’s all happening on about 145 hectares of prime port space, with access to 15 berths that can move more than 7 million tonnes of cargo a year.

“This is a game-changer for Durban Port,” said Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi, Acting Port Manager. “This new MPT is gonna boost cargo volumes and create jobs while strengthening the local and international supply chain.”

The Maydon Wharf precinct is already quite busy, with all sorts of cargo – dry bulk, break bulk, and even some container action.

This upgrade will just tighten things up and make Durban more competitive.

Truckers and logistics players who want a piece of the action can find the RFP documents on the National Treasury e-tender portal www.etender.gov.za or the Transnet website www.transnet.net.

A non-compulsory briefing session is set for 7 May 2025 at 10am, happening at N-Shed, 2 Quayside Road at the Port. Interested parties must RSVP, and all questions can be sent to [email protected].
