Truck and Containers Packed With Stolen Goods Worth R8.5 Million Recovered in Durban Operation

A major intelligence-led operation in Durban has led to the recovery of a truck, trailer, and two shipping containers packed with suspected stolen goods valued at approximately R8.5 million, in what authorities are calling a significant breakthrough in ongoing theft investigations.

The breakthrough unfolded in the Illovu area when members of the Durban Metro Police Dog Unit acted on intelligence linking a truck and trailer combination to an active theft case. Officers conducted targeted patrols and quickly identified a vehicle matching the circulated description.

Further investigation revealed that the truck, trailer, and one of the shipping containers were directly linked to multiple ongoing criminal cases under investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS), pointing to a wider suspected cargo theft network.

Due to the scale and security risk of the containers, the Amanzimtoti Fire Department was called in to assist with safe access. Once opened, officers discovered a large quantity of suspected stolen property carefully packed inside.

Recovered goods included motorcycles, vehicle parts, household appliances, furniture, clothing, tools, tyres, and various commercial items believed to be tied to organised cargo theft activity.

The scene was secured and processed by the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), with all recovered items seized and booked into police custody pending further investigation.

Authorities have confirmed that the estimated value of the recovered cargo stands at around R8.5 million, highlighting the scale of the suspected theft operation.

The joint operation involved:

  • Durban Metro Police Dog Unit
  • Amanzimtoti Fire Department
  • MSC Logistics representatives
  • Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC)

Officials have praised the coordinated response, saying the swift action helped prevent what could have been the redistribution of stolen goods back into South Africa’s supply chain.

Investigations are continuing to trace the origin of the cargo and identify the individuals or syndicates behind the movement of the stolen goods.

The recovery forms part of an ongoing crackdown on truck, container, and cargo theft across key freight corridors in KwaZulu-Natal, where logistics crime continues to pose a growing risk to the transport sector.
