A truck transporting explosives has caught fire on the N1 highway, approximately 10 kilometres north of Kroonstad.
The incident occurred a short while ago and also involves multiple light motor vehicles.
Free State Emergency Services spokesperson Sipho Towa says fire services and other emergency services are on the scene and everyone has been evacuated to make sure the explosives are extinguished properly.
Towa said that three people have sustained minor injuries.
Traffic has been diverted from Kroonstad to the R721 Vredefort route, while motorists travelling from Koppies are being redirected to the R82, Rooiwal, Heuningspruit route, which will reconnect them to the N1 highway at Kroonstad.
Motorists are advised to follow the designated diversion routes and exercise caution when traveling in the area. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
