Truck Carrying Nearly R1 Billion Worth of Drugs Busted at Beitbridge Border

South African authorities have intercepted a massive consignment of drugs valued at nearly R1 billion at the Beitbridge border post, in what is being described as one of the biggest drug seizures in the country’s history.

The operation, led by the Border Management Authority (BMA), resulted in the arrest of three Malawian nationals after officials uncovered a hidden compartment inside a truck entering South Africa through Zimbabwe.

According to Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber, the breakthrough followed an intelligence-driven operation coordinated through the National Targeting Centre. Authorities had identified a suspicious truck travelling towards the Beitbridge Port of Entry before it reached the border.

When the truck arrived at Beitbridge, BMA officials intercepted it and subjected it to a detailed inspection using the port’s truck scanner system. The scan reportedly revealed abnormalities that pointed to a concealed compartment inside the vehicle.

Officials then spent more than eight hours dismantling sections of the truck before discovering a substance later confirmed to be methaqualone, commonly known as ABBA, a substance often associated with the manufacturing of mandrax.

The Hawks and K9 units were called to the scene to assist with the investigation. Authorities seized approximately 713 000 grams of the substance, with an estimated street value of R998.2 million.

The three suspects were arrested and taken to the Musina Police Station, while the Hawks continue with further investigations into the origin and intended destination of the drugs.

The seizure marks a major victory for law enforcement agencies battling organised crime and cross-border smuggling syndicates operating in Southern Africa.

Minister Schreiber said the operation demonstrated the growing effectiveness of intelligence-led investigations and the use of technology at South Africa’s ports of entry. He added that digital transformation and improved coordination between agencies are helping strengthen border security and restore the rule of law.

Beitbridge remains one of the busiest border crossings in Africa, handling thousands of trucks transporting goods between South Africa and neighbouring countries every week. The latest bust is expected to intensify scrutiny on cross-border freight movements as authorities continue cracking down on drug trafficking networks.
