A major drug smuggling operation was disrupted this week after a truck transporting a massive load of compressed dagga was intercepted in the Western Cape, leading to the seizure of drugs valued at millions of rand.

The truck, along with its trailer, was stopped on the N1 near the Cape Town Industrial area following intelligence-driven operations by law enforcement. Upon inspection, officers discovered 53 large bags of compressed dagga hidden inside the vehicle.
The total weight of the seized cannabis was approximately 660 kilograms, with an estimated street value of R6.6 million. Several cellphones believed to be linked to the operation were also confiscated.

Authorities believe the consignment was being moved as part of a well-organised drug distribution network using heavy vehicles to move large volumes over long distances. Using trucks to transport illicit goods remains a growing concern, especially on major freight corridors like the N1, which is heavily used by long-haul operators.
Following the initial interception, investigators conducted further follow-up work in Beaufort West. This led to the discovery of additional dagga that had allegedly been offloaded from the truck before it was stopped. A vehicle linked to the operation was traced and searched, revealing two more large bags of dagga weighing just under 45 kilograms.
The follow-up operation resulted in the seizure of the additional drugs as well as the vehicle believed to have been used to move the load from the truck. The combined value of the second seizure was estimated at just under R500,000.

Law enforcement officials have praised the coordinated effort between different specialised units, including K9 teams, saying the operation dealt a significant blow to drug trafficking routes operating through the Central Karoo and Western Cape.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have indicated that more arrests may follow as they work to dismantle the broader network behind the shipment.
