A 42-year-old truck driver has been arrested at the Beitbridge Border Post after authorities intercepted a large consignment of explosives allegedly being smuggled into South Africa.
The arrest follows a joint law enforcement operation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, near Musina on Friday.
According to officials, the truck was stopped shortly after crossing the border, prompting a detailed inspection by a multidisciplinary team. During the search, authorities uncovered thousands of blasting cartridges, connector capsules, and detonator fuse reels hidden within the vehicle.
The total value of the seized explosives, along with the truck, is estimated at approximately R2.8 million.
Hawks spokesperson Avela Fumba confirmed that the driver attempted to evade arrest during the operation but was swiftly apprehended by officers on the scene.
Fumba described the interception as a significant breakthrough, warning that the explosives could have posed a serious threat if they had reached their intended destination.
“This seizure prevented potential destruction and safeguarded communities from the dangers associated with illegal explosives,” he said.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the intended destination or purpose of the explosives, but investigations are ongoing.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he will face charges including possession and illegal transportation of explosives.
