A shocking video has emerged online showing a truck driver falling asleep behind the wheel for almost two minutes, almost causing a disaster on a Zimbabwean road. According to reports, the incident occurred somewhere near Bulawayo, though the exact location has not been confirmed. GPS coordinates from the footage suggest it was on a main highway in the area.
The dashcam captures the driver dozing off while his truck drifts off the road. More worrying is that the vehicle passed two oncoming trucks and another car without colliding, a close call that could have ended in tragedy. At one point, the truck’s alert system can be heard warning the driver to rest, but he ignored the repeated warnings. Alarmingly, he briefly opens his eyes before falling back asleep, leading to the eventual crash.
While thankfully no other vehicles were hit, the footage is a stark reminder of the dangers of driver fatigue, particularly for long-haul operators.
Incidents like this underline the importance of rest, alertness, and the use of safety technology such as dashcams that can detect drowsiness and issue warnings.
“This could have ended in disaster,” said one road safety advocate. “It highlights why drivers need to take rest seriously and why trucking companies must invest in monitoring and fatigue management systems.”
Meanwhile, the video has sparked widespread discussion online about road safety and the risks of driving while drowsy.
