Truck Driver Caught Smuggling Over R7 Million Worth of Drugs at Beitbridge

Musina – A Zimbabwean truck driver, Anymore Nyambawa (55), has been arrested after authorities caught him having successfully smuggled drugs worth an estimated R7 million into South Africa via the Beitbridge Border Post.

Nyambawa appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Friday following his arrest earlier in the week.

Officials from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) intercepted his truck at a weighbridge on Tuesday as it entered the country from Zimbabwe.

Upon inspection, officers discovered 23 bags filled with a suspicious substance.

The contents were later confirmed to be illicit drugs, weighing a total of 1,173 kilograms.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact type of drugs found, but an investigation is underway to determine their origin and intended destination.

Nyambawa’s case has been postponed to 14 March for a formal bail application, and he remains in custody as law enforcement agencies continue their crackdown on drug trafficking at South Africa’s border posts.

Smuggling attempts through Beitbridge have been on the rise, with syndicates using cargo trucks to move contraband. Authorities have vowed to intensify security measures to combat cross-border crime.
