Truck Driver Dies After Brutal Robbery on the Infamous Masvingo – Beitbridge Road Detour

A truck driver has tragically died after sustaining severe injuries in a violent robbery along the notorious Masvingo–Chibi turn-off detour. The attack, which occurred last week, left the driver in critical condition. Despite being rushed to hospital, he sadly succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.

No arrests have been made yet, and the identity of the driver has not been officially released.

This tragic death adds to a growing list of attacks on truck drivers using detours along the Beitbridge–Masvingo–Harare corridor, where incomplete roadworks and poor lighting have turned certain stretches into hunting grounds for robbers.

In a related incident reported by SA Trucker, a cross-border trucker working for Mother Truckers was brutally assaulted and robbed on the dangerous detour between Rutenga and Ngundu. The Swazi national suffered serious head injuries after being struck with a machete. The section, plagued by years of abandoned road construction, has become a criminal hotspot.

Criminals often pose as passengers or hijack drivers on secluded bypasses.

These incidents have sparked outrage among truckers, with many calling for immediate police intervention and the completion of long-abandoned construction projects that force heavy vehicles onto unsafe detours.

Truckers are urged to avoid picking up passengers, avoid isolated routes at night, and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.

As the industry mourns another fallen driver, the message is clear: enough is enough.
