A truck driver tragically lost his life in the early hours of Saturday morning following a collision with several cows on the R60 between Swellendam and Bruintjiesrivier.
According to reports from the scene, the heavy-duty truck ploughed into a group of cattle on the roadway, killing many of the animals and leaving others badly injured. The impact was so severe that the driver was ejected through the windscreen, landing on the tarmac.
Emergency services responded quickly, but paramedics confirmed that the driver had already succumbed to his injuries.
This tragedy once again raises concerns about stray livestock on South Africa’s roads.
Just last week, Drakenstein Municipality teamed up with the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, SAPS and local neighbourhood watch groups in Saron for an outreach operation to tackle the growing problem of stray large animals.
As part of the initiative, 100 horses were vaccinated and microchipped to improve traceability and promote responsible ownership — measures aimed at preventing animals from becoming a danger on public roads.

Officials say such interventions are critical to reducing the risks that stray animals pose to road users, especially truck drivers travelling rural routes at night.
Authorities are investigating the crash, while the trucking community has been left shaken by the loss of the driver.
Our deepest condolences go out to the driver’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
