Truck driver fatally stabbed while driving in Kuruman, passenger arrested

A 29-year-old truck driver was fatally stabbed while driving through Kuruman in the Northern Cape on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, in an incident that also threatened the safety of other road users before a fellow truck driver managed to bring the vehicle under control.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), another truck driver noticed that something appeared to be wrong with the moving truck and drove alongside it to investigate.

When he reached the vehicle, he reportedly found the driver covered in blood with the driver’s door open. Acting quickly, he climbed into the moving truck, moved the injured driver to the passenger seat and safely brought the heavy vehicle to a stop before rushing the victim to Kuruman Hospital.

Sadly, the truck driver was declared dead on arrival after sustaining multiple stab wounds.

Police said information gathered at the scene indicated that the passenger travelling with the deceased was allegedly responsible for the fatal attack.

The incident was immediately reported to SAPS, and detectives opened a murder case at Kuruman Police Station.

Police members quickly traced and arrested a 31-year-old suspect in Livingstone Street, Kuruman, where he was allegedly attempting to evade arrest.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.

The Acting District Commissioner of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, praised the officers involved for their swift response and diligent investigation, which led to the suspect’s prompt arrest.

The circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing remain under investigation, and police have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack.
