Hanover – A truck driver was found dead inside his vehicle at a lay-by on the N1 between Hanover and Richmond on Thursday around midday, raising concerns after a suspected chemical leak was discovered in his trailer.
The driver, identified as Zahier Nolan, was working for Titanic Trucking when he was found unresponsive in his truck, approximately 20km before Hanover.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of his death, and an investigation has been launched by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Sources at the scene claimed that there was a chemical leak in the truck’s cargo area, but officials have not confirmed any link between the leak and Nolan’s passing.
The authorities have not ruled out other possible causes and are awaiting the results of forensic examinations.
A close friend of the deceased, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss. “We had plans for the coming Ramadan with both our families, but all that is gone now,” he said.
