A truck driver was among several people whose quick actions helped save a man during a dramatic rescue on the Adams Road bridge over the N2 in Amanzimtoti on Tuesday.
According to a report by the South Coast Sun, passing motorists Kayla and Wesley Gander noticed the man standing at the bridge railing, appearing distressed. Wesley stopped to speak to him, but moments later, after the man’s mother arrived at the scene, the man went over the bridge.
Wesley managed to grab hold of the man, preventing him from falling into the busy N2 traffic below.
At the same time, Johann Potgieter, Kayla’s brother-in-law, ran down to the highway and flagged down a passing truck. The truck driver stopped and positioned the vehicle beneath the bridge, allowing the trailer to cushion the man’s fall when rescuers could no longer hold onto him.
Members of the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) also responded and assisted in bringing the man to safety before he was taken to hospital.
Speaking to the publication, Kayla Gander said she was relieved the rescue prevented what could have become a far more serious incident involving traffic on the N2.

CCPO’s Paul O’Neill reported that the man’s mother said her son had been experiencing mental health challenges.
