A truck driver was injured after two trucks were shot at in separate but possibly related incidents on the N3 near Heidelberg on Thursday night, raising fresh concerns about safety on one of South Africa’s busiest freight routes.
According to Heidelberg Volunteer Medics and First Responders, crews were alerted at approximately 20:59 and immediately responded to the first scene. While en route, additional security support was requested from Crime Stop, and the South African Police Service was notified.
On arrival, responders from Heidelberg Volunteer Medics and First Responders assessed an injured truck driver who had been caught in the shooting. The driver was later transported privately to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.
While emergency teams were still attending to the first incident, a second truck came under fire in what is believed to be a related attack. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the second shooting.
Heidelberg Volunteer Medics and First Responders indicated that the two incidents occurred within close proximity and within a short time frame, suggesting a possible link, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.
Truck attacks have remained a serious concern across South Africa, particularly along major transport corridors like the N3, which carries a high volume of freight between Durban and Gauteng. Incidents like these continue to put drivers at risk, especially during night operations.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shootings. Motorists and truck drivers travelling along the N3 are urged to remain vigilant, especially during evening hours, and to report any suspicious activity.
