A video doing the rounds on social media shows yet another reminder of what happens when a driver tries to juggle two jobs at once, driving a truck and operating a cellphone.
In the clip, the truck driver can clearly be seen attempting to balance his attention between the narrow road ahead and the cellphone in his hand. For a moment it almost looks like he has mastered the art. The driver even manages to avoid a pothole in the road, which probably gave him the confidence that everything was still under control.
Unfortunately, physics and common sense had other plans.
While trying to keep one eye on the road and the other on his phone, the truck slowly drifts off the narrow roadway. Within seconds the situation goes from “almost impressive multitasking” to a full loss of control as the vehicle leaves the road.
And just like that, both the cellphone and the truck demand their full attention at the same time. The driver quickly discovers that neither one is willing to share.
The end result is predictable. The truck veers off the road and the driver loses control completely, proving once again that a heavy vehicle and a cellphone are two things that simply refuse to be managed simultaneously.
For professional drivers, the lesson here should not be a difficult one. A fully loaded truck weighing several tonnes requires full concentration at all times, especially on narrow roads where one small mistake can turn into a serious incident.
Yet videos like this keep appearing, suggesting that some drivers still believe they can outsmart the laws of attention.
Sadly, the road usually wins that argument.
According to GPS coordinates on the dashcam footage, the incident happened on the N2 around the Berlin area in the Eastern Cape.
The footage serves as a blunt reminder to truck drivers everywhere that the moment a phone enters the driver’s hand, the truck has already lost the driver’s full attention.
And as this driver found out the hard way, a truck does not politely wait while you finish checking your phone. It keeps moving.
