The case against a Zimbabwean truck driver accused of smuggling explosives into South Africa has been postponed, with the suspect remaining in custody following his latest court appearance.
Edgar Maroto, 42, appeared before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday for a formal bail application. However, the matter was postponed to Wednesday, with the court indicating that further proceedings are required before a decision can be made.
Maroto was arrested on 10 April 2026 at the Beitbridge Border Post near Musina after authorities intercepted a truck allegedly carrying a hidden consignment of explosives.
The arrest followed a joint operation involving the Border Management Authority and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation. During an inspection, officials discovered a concealed compartment mounted underneath the truck trailer.
Inside, authorities found thousands of blasting cartridges, detonators and fuse reels. The explosives alone are valued at over R1 million.
Maroto faces a charge of possession of explosives. His first court appearance took place on 13 April 2026, where the case was initially postponed to allow for further investigation and preparation for a formal bail application.
The latest postponement means the accused will remain behind bars until his next appearance, where the court is expected to hear arguments related to his bail.
The case continues to draw attention as authorities clamp down on cross-border smuggling, particularly involving dangerous materials that could be linked to serious crimes such as illegal mining and cash-in-transit robberies.
Proceedings are set to resume on Wednesday at the Musina Magistrate’s Court.
