Truck Driver Shot Dead by His Passenger Near Beitbridge

A man has appeared in court following the fatal shooting of a truck driver whose body was discovered near Bubi, outside Beitbridge.

The accused, Johana Mabasa, a South African national, was on Monday charged with murder in connection with the death of truck driver Dave Mukanganwi.

Mukanganwi was found with a gunshot wound to the head in the early hours of 19 February.
Mabasa also faces a separate charge of contravening immigration laws after allegedly entering Zimbabwe without proper travel documents.

The matter was heard before Provincial Magistrate Gillian Padzakashamba at a special court sitting held at Beitbridge District Hospital, where the accused appeared under armed guard.

It is understood that Mabasa sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical attention.

The court heard from prosecutor Sichelesile Sibanda that at around 2am on 19 February, Mabasa allegedly boarded Mukanganwi’s truck at Beitbridge, claiming he needed assistance to rescue another driver at Rutenga.

According to the State, a confrontation later broke out inside the truck cabin. Mukanganwi was shot once.

The bullet reportedly entered below the ear and exited through the mouth, causing severe facial injuries. Investigators also noted two bullet holes on the upper left side of the cabin, indicating the firearm may have been discharged from inside the vehicle.

The prosecution further told the court that WhatsApp messages recovered from the accused’s cellphone allegedly show he informed an unidentified person that he had fought with and killed someone.

After the shooting, Mabasa is said to have sought help from a man identified as Jefter Nyanga, claiming he had been injured and needed hospital treatment.

He was remanded in custody until 9 March 2026 as investigations continue.
