Truck Driver Takes Own Life After Being Caught Stealing Diesel in Zambia

A Tanzanian truck driver working for ANAMOL Transport Company in Dar es Salaam tragically passed away after reportedly ingesting insecticide, moments after being caught stealing diesel from his employer’s truck in Nakonde, Zambia.

According to ISO FM 93.5 the incident unfolded when the company’s supervisor, Joseph Steven, tracked the truck’s GPS signal to Macrich Truck Park in Wulongo village. The truck, which was en route to Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, had mysteriously failed to continue its journey.

Upon arriving at the location, the supervisor discovered Khalfani Salaam, the driver, siphoning fuel from both the main and reserve tanks of the vehicle.

A subsequent audit revealed that 1,450 litres of diesel valued at K36,772 (R28,200) had been stolen.

As Salaam was being escorted to the police station, he suddenly pulled out a bottle of Lava insecticide from his bag and ingested it, collapsing shortly thereafter. Emergency services rushed him to Nakonde District Hospital, where he was admitted, but unfortunately, he passed away at around 05:00 on June 19.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Salaam with whitish foam around his mouth, and the insecticide bottle was recovered from his personal belongings. His body was later transported to Tanzanian authorities after being deposited at the local mortuary.
