Truck Drivers’ Wives Celebrated in Western Cape Freight Tribute

The Western Cape Government today rolled out the red carpet for the powerhouse women who keep the wheels of the freight industry turning. Hosted by the Department of Mobility as part of Freight Focus Month, the event shined a spotlight on female truck drivers and the often-overlooked wives and partners who support them behind the scenes.

Freight is the lifeblood of the province and the country at large – from groceries and fuel to life-saving medication and construction materials, everything moves by truck. Yet, behind every delivery is a human story of dedication, resilience, and sacrifice. The event was about recognising the women behind those stories.

Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku paid tribute to the “silent strength” of women in freight:

“To the women who power our freight system – whether you’re driving a rig or holding the home front – thank you. You carry a heavy load, not just in kilometres, but in emotional sacrifice too. Today, we honour you.”

Truck driver Lauryn Rhodenburg shared her pride:

“Driving a truck isn’t just a job for me, it’s a passion. As a woman, I believe we bring a different kind of strength. I’m proud to be part of the change that shows other women that we belong in this industry too.”

Sanshia Witbooi, the wife of a long-haul driver, added her voice:

“Being a trucker’s wife is its own journey. Today reminded me that we’re not alone – there’s a whole community that sees us and values us.”

Head of Communication for the department, Muneera Allie, wrapped it up perfectly:

“These women may be unseen by the public, but they hold families, businesses and supply chains together. We see you. We appreciate you. We celebrate you.”

As Freight Focus Month rolls on, the Department is urging South Africans to spare a thought for the people behind the freight system – the drivers, their families, and the unsung heroes holding it all together.
