Truck hijackers caught red handed offloading loot in Durban

Durban – Police on Friday swooped on three people in Clairwood after a truck hijacking late on Thursday evening.

Police spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that the truck was driving from Swaziland to Hammersdale yesterday to deliver goods.

“The driver gave two hitch-hikers a lift while traveling on the N2 near Swaziland. At about 11pm near Salt Rock, one of the hitch-hikers asked to be dropped off and the driver stopped. Three unknown suspects then approached them and pointed the driver with a firearm. The driver fled and the suspects drove away with the truck,” Mbele said.

The driver reported the matter to the Umhlali police station.

“The Rapid Rail Police Unit from Reunion near Umlazi working with a tracking company managed to trace the hijacked vehicle to Clairwood. All three suspects were arrested for possession of property suspected to be stolen,” said Mbele.

“When they were arrested the suspects were in the process of transferring the trailer with contents to another truck. The container was still sealed and contained goods worth more than R1.5 million.”

The suspects aged between 30 and 39 will be charged for being in possession of stolen property and will appear in court soon. They will be facing hijacking charges at a later stage. IOL
