Update: Truck driver survives N3/N12 fire as major road closures continue

UPDATE: The driver of an articulated truck that jackknifed and caught fire at the Elands Interchange in Gauteng has survived the crash but sustained burn injuries and trauma.

The crash happened at around 12:55 on Thursday, 1 October, at the N3 southbound/N12 westbound split at the Elands Interchange.

According to emergency services, the driver managed to escape from the burning truck.

He sustained burn injuries and trauma and was transported to an Alberton medical facility for further treatment.

DEMS firefighters from Alberton and Germiston were called to the scene and were still dealing with the truck fire when the latest information was received.

Major road closures

The crash has resulted in significant restrictions on both routes.

  • N12 westbound: All three lanes closed
  • N3 southbound: Three of four lanes closed

The closures are expected to remain in place until late afternoon while firefighting and recovery operations continue.

A video sent to SA Trucker earlier showed traffic already heavily backed up as the burning truck blocked lanes on the southbound carriageway.

Motorists travelling through the Elands Interchange should expect severe delays and are urged to approach the area with extreme caution.

Where possible, motorists should consider using an alternative route until the affected lanes are reopened.

The circumstances that led to the truck jackknifing have not yet been confirmed.
