Two men were arrested at the Groblersbrug Border Post for allegedly smuggling illicit goods worth over R1.5 million into South Africa.
Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng confirmed the arrests, revealing that the suspects, aged 38 and 42, were intercepted at the border with Botswana on Saturday. The truck, a white Freightliner with Gauteng plates, reportedly transported a consignment of precious stones.
“A customs official stopped the truck at the import arrival gate for using an incorrect remover code. The driver then attempted to bribe the official with R20,000, but the bribe was rejected,” said Thakeng.
The customs official immediately alerted SAPS, and the truck was escorted to the inspection ramp under police guard. Hidden beneath the declared cargo of precious stones were contraband items, including illicit cigarettes, facial creams, and tablets.
The seized items included:
- 2,250 cartons of Remington Gold cigarettes valued at R606,510.
- 4,200 containers of Extra Clear creams worth R252,000.
- 5,760 tubes of Epiderm facial cream valued at R172,800.
- Appeti tablets valued at R695,000.
The truck and trailer, valued at R1.1 million, were also confiscated.
The suspects, both foreign nationals, are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, facing charges of smuggling illicit goods.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the customs officer and SAPS for their swift action, commending their dedication to combating illicit trade and ensuring community safety.
The Groblersbrug Border Post continues to be a hotspot for smuggling activities, but authorities have vowed to remain vigilant in their efforts to curb illegal trade.
