A truck driver had to be airlifted to hospital after sustaining severe injuries during a rear-end collision into another truck on the N3 South in the Ashburton area outside Pietermaritzburg on Friday morning.
According to Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson, its crews, including the Midlands EMS K9 Search and Rescue vehicle attended this serious accident on Friday afternoon.
“On arrival, they found that a truck driver was severely entrapped and required urgent advanced life support treatment. Midlands EMS rescue medics, along with Midlands EMS advanced life support paramedics, worked tirelessly to free the injured driver. Another private service and Msunduzi Fire and Rescue assisted them. The rescue operation took nearly three hours to complete,” he said.
Roland said a Netcare 911 aeromedical helicopter was called in to airlift the patient to the hospital due to the road closure and the severity of his injuries.
Motorists are urged to delay travel as the roadway remains closed, and authorities were still on the scene working to recover the crashed vehicles.
