Truckers heading into Mozambique have been strongly advised to avoid public roads starting from midnight on October 21, 2024, due to a national strike organized by opposition presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane.
The Mozambican Federation of Road Transport Associations (FEMATRO) and the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) have both issued urgent warnings to transport operators about potential unrest during the strike.
FEMATRO’s advisory urges all truckers, including those from South Africa, to steer clear of Mozambique’s highways unless absolutely necessary.
For those forced to travel, defensive driving is recommended to navigate any risks.
Previous strikes have seen violent disruptions, with trucks being targeted on major routes.
The PRM has announced that they will take “coercive measures” to prevent acts of vandalism, public disorder, and illegal protests, reinforcing the need for truckers to stay off the roads.

The police are on high alert, particularly following Mondlane’s allegations of fraud in the October 9 elections, which have sparked tensions across the country.
Truckers and businesses are advised to remain cautious and monitor official updates from both FEMATRO and the police.
Safety remains the priority during this volatile period.
