The South African trucking industry is mourning the loss of respected abnormal load specialist and transport entrepreneur Peter Munro, owner of P Munro Transport, who passed away on 26 June at the age of 52.
Known for his professionalism, integrity and passion for the transport industry, Munro built P Munro Transport into one of South Africa’s recognised names in abnormal load transport. The company earned a reputation for safely moving oversized and complex cargo across the country, taking on projects that required careful planning, specialist equipment and experienced crews.
Although based in Heidelberg, Gauteng, Munro’s work reached every corner of South Africa. His company became well known among transport operators, logistics professionals and enthusiasts for successfully completing some of the country’s most challenging heavy haulage projects.
Many SA Trucker readers will remember P Munro Transport’s remarkable transport of the Aerotol VIP aircraft from Wonderboom Airport to Hoedspruit in Limpopo. The unusual convoy attracted widespread public attention as motorists watched the aircraft travel hundreds of kilometres by road before reaching its final destination.
The company also made headlines after successfully transporting a massive 160-tonne, 30-metre-long GMAM Class Garratt steam locomotive, another project that showcased the specialised skills and precision required in abnormal load transport. These operations highlighted not only the capability of P Munro Transport but also the expertise that Peter Munro brought to the heavy haulage industry.
Beyond the impressive projects, colleagues and those who knew him describe Munro as a humble, approachable leader who treated customers, employees and industry partners with respect. His commitment to delivering safely and professionally earned him the trust of clients and the admiration of fellow transport operators.
His passing leaves a significant gap in South Africa’s transport industry, particularly within the specialised abnormal load sector where experience and knowledge are invaluable.
Peter Munro is survived by his family, friends, employees and the many people whose lives he touched throughout his career.
