Trucks Movement Resumes at Lebombo Border Post Amid Mozambican Protests

The movement of cargo trucks has resumed at the Lebombo Border Post between South Africa and Mozambique following disruptions caused by protests in Mozambique.

The protests, led by Mozambican opposition supporters, stem from allegations that the October general election results were rigged in favour of the ruling Frelimo Party.

Mpumalanga’s MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Jackie Macie, confirmed that cargo trucks are now being processed in batches and escorted by Mozambican authorities once they cross the border.

“Partially, they’ve opened for the cargo to move. We are processing them, I think, in the batch of 15 … we started in the morning. We have taken 15 and some are back. We are doing it continuously. We are hoping that maybe when the day goes by or even tomorrow, we’ll open that fully so that they will move as normally as it should be,” said Macie.

The protests earlier this week brought truck movements to a standstill, causing delays and disruptions for transporters reliant on the vital trade route.

Authorities are hopeful that operations will soon return to full capacity to ease the flow of goods between the two nations.

The situation remains tense as Mozambique grapples with the aftermath of the contested election.

However, efforts to manage the border post and ensure the safety of cargo movement are ongoing.

Transporters are advised to remain patient as authorities work to stabilize the situation and ensure the seamless flow of trade.
